A daughter of prominent sire Var made history at the TBA complex on Friday, the third and final day of the 2017 National Yearling Sale.

Consigned by Varsfontein, the bay named Goddess Var was knocked down to Shadwell South Africa, for R5 million, establishing herself as the top lot sold at the sale thus far.

Goddess Var is, to date, the most expensive yearling ever sold off a Bloodstock South Africa auction in Germiston.

The bay filly is certainly bred to be good -not only is she a daughter of one of South Africa's top stallions, but she is out of a winning daughter of champion sire Captain Al and former Equus Champion Promisefrommyheart. The latter in turn is the dam of G2 winning young sire Master Of My Fate and the stakes winning racemare Justthewayyoure. The latter produced Derby winner Captain Splendid to the cover of Captain Al.

Further back this is the extended family of champions Kings Gambit and London News, as well as the Breeders' Cup winner Pluck.

Var has enjoyed another good sale this year, with his yearlings also including a filly out of Urabamba, who fetched R1.4 million earlier in the sale.
