The progeny of recently retired five times South African champion sire Silvano continue to prove hugely popular with South African buyers, a fact which was underlined once again on the first day of the Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale on Thursday.

The Silvano colt Lord Heathfield topped proceedings on day one, when the Wilgerbosdrift consigned two-year-old was knocked down to Form Bloodstock’s Jehan Malherbe for R1 100 000.
Catalogued as Lot 100, Lord Heathfield, a half-brother to two winners, is out of the top class Rock Of Gibraltar mare Europa Point, whose nine wins included both the G1 President’s Champions Challenge and G1 Empress Club Stakes.

From the same female line as former South African champion sire Fort Wood, Europa Point’s dam Gorband is also responsible for unbeaten Richmond Stakes winner Harbour Watch, sire of this year’s high-class three-year-olds Pyledriver and Baron Samedi.

Silvano also provided Thursday’s top priced filly, with the Ridgemont Highlands consigned Look Homeward (Lot 54) sold to John Freeman for R360 000. A three-parts sister to the Silvano sired G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Silver Mountain, Look Homeward is out of Spectrum’s three time winning daughter Careful Hiker –who ran third to champion All Is Secret in the 2012 G1 Thekwini Stakes.

Earlier in the year, Silvano supplied the top five lots at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, where his son Celestial City topped the sale when knocked down for R7 000 000.

With some exceptionally well related lots still to come up for sale tomorrow, expectations are hopeful for Friday’s day of trading.
